At the start of your practical test, your driving examiner will ask you to perform the show me / tell me test. You must answer both correctly to avoid a driver fault.
Q Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
A Open the bonnet and identify the dipstick. Explain how the car should be on level ground, dipstick removed, wiped and re-dipped, the oil level should be between the high and low marks. If oil needs to be added it should be of the correct grade and filled via the filler situated on top of the engine.
Q Identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you’d check the engine has the correct level.
A Identify the coolant header tank and show the level indicator. To top up, this is best done when the engine is cold to avoid risk of scalding and should be topped up to the marked level with coolant recommended by the car manufacturer.
Q Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check for the correct level.
A Identify the windscreen washer reservoir and explain how this should be filled to the top with screen wash, it is also an offence to drive with an empty reservoir as this is potentially dangerous, especially in winter months.
Q Identify the brake fluid reservoir and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of brake fluid.
A Identify the brake fluid reservoir and point out the high and low marks, the brake fluid level should be between the marks, if brake fluid needs be added, ensure it is of the correct type.
Q Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
A Operate the brake pedal and check for the reflection in windows etc (you may need to turn the ignition on with some cars). Alternatively, you may ask the examiner to assist you by asking to check behind your vehicle.
Q Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A Drive forwards slowly and gently apply the brakes, they should stop the car satisfactory and not feel spongy or pull to one side.
Q Tell me where you would find the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the pressures should be checked.
A Refer to the munufacturers manual and check tyre pressure using a reliable pressure guage, this should be done when tyres are cold, remember to check the spare and to replace valve caps.
Q Tell me how you would check the tyres for sufficient tread depth and they are safe to use on the road.
A The tyres should be checked using a tread depth guage, they should have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central 3/4, the remainder should have visible tread. There should be no cuts or bulges in the sidewall.
Q Show me or explain how you would check the power steering is working before starting a journey.
A With the engine running, the steering wheel moves easily when turned, it should not feel heavy or stiff.

A Turn on ignition, switch on headlights and walk around the car.
Q Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
A Switch on hazard warning lights and walk around the car.
Q Show me how you would check the horn is working.
A Press the horn, this is normally located in the centre of the steering wheel boss.
Q Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
A Apply the footbrake and release the parking brake, then re-apply the parking brake, it should secure itself when the button is released and not have excessive travel.
Q Tell me how you would adjust your head restraint to provide maximum protection in the event of an accident.
A Ideally the top of the head restraint should be between the top of your head and the top of your ears.
Q Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.
A Operate the windscreen wash/wipe facility on the wiper stalk.
Q Show me how to set the demister controls to clear all windows, this should include both front and rear screens.
A Turn the air deflector to the demist position, increase heat and turn up the fan setting. Turn on heated rear window.
Q Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
A Turn on ignition, turn on dipped headlights, turn on fog lights, check the rear fog light warning light is illuminated on the dash. Fog lights should be used when visibility is less than 100 metres (fog code).
Q Tell me how you would know if there is a problem with your anti lock braking system.
A A warning light will illuminate on the dash.
Q Show me how to switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know your main beam is on whilst in the car.
A Turn your ignition on, headlights on and operate the main beam control, this is normall done by pushing the indicator stalk forward, a blue light will illuminate on the dash.
